【Seminar】The High Intensity Frontier of QED

Two main forces are driving a heightened interest in high-intensity QED (strong-field QED). First, the technology of high power laser systems continues to improve and the construction and commisioning of new laser facilities is underway. Second, there is a new interest from particle physics labs to test the Standard Model on the "Intensity Frontier". In this talk, I will give an overview of the intersection of these two topics: the high intensity frontier of QED. Beginning with the basics of how calculations are performed for QED in intense electromagnetic fields (the plane-wave model), the talk will explain the aims of the particle physics experiment "LUXE" at DESY, to find signatures of high-intensity QED. Then, some current "hot topics" of active research will be summarised.
About the Speaker
Benjamin John King is an assistant professor at the University of Plymouth for theoretical physics. He received his master degree in theoretical physics from Imperial College London in 2006. Then he moved to MPI-K(Heidelberg) and obtained his Ph.D.. After that, he did his postdoctoral work at the MPI-K and LMU Munich.
